There is now a new breed of female celebrities who are proving that age is not to be feared and that you can be over 50, healthy, and fabulous. As the saying goes the older you get the wiser you get and lately in the media, it has been truly refreshing to see so many celebrities over 50 embrace these life changes and make it easier for all of us to talk about so many topics that were once considered taboo.
Whether it be how to beautiful in our skin (wrinkles and all), styling our wardrobes to enhance our best assets, deciding how we want to wear our hair (to grey or not to grey), or talking openly about how perimenopause and menopause have affected them, we are now seeing a new breed of strong women who do not want to be silenced and who want to share their insights to help other women navigate through these middle stages of life.
In the past week alone, we have seen celebrities like Drew Barrymore talk openly about her personal experience with perimenopause and menopause as a whole on the US TV show - CBS mornings. During the candid chat, Drew revealed that she knew she was in perimenopause when she “started having her period every two weeks”. In the most refreshing part of the conversation, Drew revealed that her outlook regarding menopause was positive saying “I think more women in their 40s, 50s, ’60s are so attractive and living their best lives. The way menopause has been branded as is, you’re old, you’re done and that’s not it”.
For women in their 50s to hear positive outlooks from women they admire about aging is a real shift in the negative narratives that many of us had become accustomed to and this shift in dialogue can have a positive real-world impact on women and their health outcomes in mid-age. More openness on mid-age changes has led to more and more women seeking advice on how to live their best lives whether it be through medical or alternative solutions.
It's not just health that many celebrities over 50 are talking about, many are open about when they reach mid-life they are more confident as they know who they are, what they do and don’t like, and that as they reach mid-life they want to spend their time with the people that lift them up.
Merryl Streep has said that “The good thing about getting older is that you find your way, you have your own rules and you have a better understanding of yourself. Don’t waste time worrying about your weight or your looks, you have to embrace getting older. Life is precious, and as you get older and lose people, you realize that each day is a gift”.
Here are some simple tips to look after your body and mind as you age.
